Canopy management is the most effective and cheapest prevention in organic viticulture. An open canopy and an exposed cluster zone dry faster, receive treatments better and are less favourable to downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis.
Leaf removal in the cluster zone, orientation and canopy height, and vigour control reduce the humid microclimate the fungi need — cutting the number of treatments and improving their efficacy. It is the base the whole organic programme rests on.

In hot climates, yes, if excessive or on the afternoon-sun side. Moderate, morning-side leaf removal balances health and sunburn protection.

It does not replace them, but it greatly cuts pressure and the number of treatments needed — the prevention that makes the organic programme viable.
