Ecological infrastructure is the backbone of functional biodiversity. Hedges, copses, dry-stone walls, flower strips and corridors give permanent shelter, food and breeding sites to beneficials and pollinators.

Unlike the cover crop, which is seasonal, these structures are perennial — they sustain populations of beneficials that colonise the vineyard and help regulate pests, while storing carbon in woody biomass and reducing erosion and wind.

Diversity tends to favour beneficials over pests, because it creates a more balanced food web. Choosing the right species reinforces that effect.

How much area should I dedicate?

Many sustainability schemes target 5% or more of the area in ecological infrastructure. Unproductive margins and corners are the natural starting point.
